DR. MARTE GUTIERREZ, Virginia Tech & State University, USA

Dr. Marte S. Gutierrez is currently Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. He was formerly Senior Engineer and Area Manager at the Norwegian Geotechnical Insitute (NGI) in Oslo, Norway. He holds a PhD from the University of Tokyo in Japan, a MS in Civil Engineering from the University of the Philippines, and a BS in Civil Engineering (with honors) from Saint Mary’s University. He was awarded a Royal Norwegian Postdoctoral Fellowship, a visiting international fellowship by the Canadian National Science and Engineering Research Council, a senior visiting scholarship by the Science and Technology Agency of Japan, and a doctoral scholarship by the Ministy of Education of Japan. He has published more 90 papers in journals and conference proceedings, and more than 50 technical reports. He has given presentations in several countries. He is actively involved in several technical committees of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and serves in the editorial board of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
